  London, UK - 29 December 2004, 12:30 GMT - The mi2g team's
thoughts and prayers are with those families and loved ones who have experienced
the loss of life as a result of the catastrophic earth quake in the Indian
Ocean, which in turn unleashed the devastating tsunamis across South East
    Asia.

The Red Cross has launched an emergency
appeal in response to the widespread flooding, caused by 26th December's
massive earthquake off the coast of Sumatra. More than 80,000 people are known
to have died, thousands more are injured and a million have been displaced
from their homes. mi2g supports this timely initiative.

The Pope has led prayers for the victims, and the Queen has said she is "deeply
saddened" by the tragedy. Buddhist monks have given out rice and curry
to grieving tsunami survivors in some affected countries as aircraft have
begun dropping food to isolated towns. South East Asia's disaster relief operation
has finally begun to kick in. Monks from the predominant Buddhist community
held prayers for the dead as bodies were cremated. In Muslim villages, a bulldozer
was used to dig mass graves at one spot, while people elsewhere used cooking
utensils or their bare hands to bury the dead. Refugees from ravaged homes
have crowded into churches, temples and mosques.
Emergency supplies such as tarpaulins, blankets, cooking utensils and water
purification tablets are being provided by the Red Cross. Please make a further
cash or credit card donation to enable them to send these vital relief supplies
to those who need them most from here.
The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is at the forefront
of the response to this disaster. A British Red Cross logistics team has already
flown to one of the countries - Sri Lanka - most affected by the tidal waves.
The logistics team is coordinating the arrival of all Red Cross relief goods
being sent, ensuring they reach those who need them most.
