What Is The New Greece Deal Save The Treaty of Versailles Once Again?

London, UK - 13th July 2015, 12:50 GMT

What we learn from history is that we do not learn from history. The catalogue of cruelties packaged as the latest 'Agreekment' with Greece echoes the folly of the Treaty of Versailles in 1919. The latest deal proposed by the European leaders is a deliberate and vindictive humiliation that is political, economic and social suicide for Greece and ultimately the European Union. This waterboarding torture of Greece is unlikely to yield to a pleasant outcome according to a number of senior bankers, financiers and government officials we have spoken to in the last 18 hours.

Why Is It Going To Be Rejected By The Sovereign Greek Parliament? #ThisIsACoup

Europe's experience garnered less than one hundred years ago -- at enormous loss of life and great sacrifice -- has been utterly ignored in 2015 by her main economic and financial overlord, Germany. Greece, the cradle of Western democracy, has become Europe's main protagonist and sufferer, crucified yet again, to protect the lacunas of the Eurozone and the European Union -- as functioning yet fundamentally flawed architectures -- without fire exists.

For example, the requirement to hand over 50 billion euros of Greek assets to a separate fund in Luxembourg so that those assets can be privatised may appear fine on paper but it may not be easy or practical to implement this hiving off process. Ask the IMF, how easy was it to try to privatise Greek assets in recent years?

If this final rescue agreement is accepted by the Greek parliament, the sovereignty of Greece will be fundamentally superceded and it will become a vassal state or colony of the European Union beholden to her creditors -- first amongst those being Germany. For this reason of loss of sovereignty, there is a high probability that this latest agreement may yet be rejected by those elected in Athens causing tremendous loss of face for European leaders and the European project. The financial markets may also go into a tail-spin at that stage.

Going forwards, this sorry episode, regardless of its outcome demonstrates the demise of the European project, the beginning of the end. Why?

1. Germany seems to have implemented a fourth reich despite the outcome of the Second World War.

2. Where there is no trust there can be no relationship and the breakdown of trust amongst European member countries particularly the Romance set led by France versus the Nordic set led by Germany is enormous.

3. The reputation damage to the European Union may be irreversible and eventually fatal. The weakness of the Euro and the European Union may follow. The very survival of both the Euro and the EU may be at stake.

4. We know that the Treaty of Versailles in 1919 did not work. In fact, it spawned the Second World War in 1939, which was manifold more destructive than the Great War.

5. The Marshall Plan in 1948 worked in the aftermath of the Second World War. It was based on capital injection, debt forgiveness and rigorous control of expenses. That is what should be happening in regard to Greece .
